Bases and Their Characteristics

Definition of Base: Bases are substances that can neutralize acids by accepting hydrogen ions (H⁺) or donating hydroxide ions (OH⁻) in a solution. They often have a bitter taste and a slippery feel.

Characteristics of Bases

  • Bases have a bitter taste (though tasting chemicals is not recommended!).
  • They feel slippery or soapy when touched.
  • Bases affect indicators by turning red litmus paper to blue.
  • When dissolved in water, bases release ions that allow the solution to conduct electricity.
  • Bases react with acids to form salt and water, a process called neutralization.
  • Many bases are corrosive and should be handled carefully.

Examples of Common Bases

  • Sodium hydroxide (NaOH)
  • Potassium hydroxide (KOH)
  • Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂)
  • Ammonia (NH₃)
